Whether young or old the creed insists on the need to reflect positively both on the Navy and the country you serve. The Navy creed is not just a collection of meaningless word. It represents the main responsibilities taken by the Navy Personnel. The short statement bears serious contemplation and examination. It is a personal proclamation for all Navy personnel who have chosen to serve their country diligently. That is why it does not start with they, you or we, it starts with I. It is individual and personal. It defines your being.

History of the Creed

The original version of the creed originated from an idea by Admiral James Watkins back in 1986. He was the then Chief of the Naval Operations. He formed a task force that came up with a code of ethics for the Navy. The team came up with an eight point recitation known as -The Navy Uniform. Later it was scaled down to the Navy Creed.

The current Sailors creed is a product of the various Blue Ribbon Recruit Panels that were formed in 1993 at the direction of the then Chief of Naval Operation Admiral Frank B.Kelso II. Since then the Sailor’s creed has been revised twice, in 1994 AND 1997.The changes were necessary to make it inclusive and descriptive of all hands. It is usually taught and recited in officer accession programs as well as in boot camps. Here is the current version of the Navy Creed.

I proudly serve my country’s Navy combat team with Honor, Courage and Commitment.
I am committed to excellence and the fair treatment of all.

Being a US sailor is not an easy thing. It means being part and parcel of something that is bigger than you. While many desire such a honor very few actually achieve it. Yes it is an arduous job, but it is also the highest designation for one to be deemed fit to represent his or her country on the seas. This honor cannot be bought, it can only be earned!
