Scottish Swords are centuries old and steeped in history. The Claymores and Excalibur swords are some of the swords we are familiar with. There is no question that the Scottish were some of the greatest warriors this world has ever seen. Far back in the day, they took on opposing countries like England, minus any armour and still came out victorious. This is not to say that they didn’t have any help, because they wielded authentic Scottish swords. These potent slabs of fine metal could make any adversary tremble at the simple sight of them.

How Scottish Swords are Forged

Choice metal which comes in the shape of a bar or even a blend of metals are stuck in a forge and heated up. Afterwords they are hammered into the desired shape and the hammering process typically is lengthy. This particular process is called “drawing out the sword”. In varied sections, the sword is worked on, most always around 6 inches in length or so. It is thereby repeatedly hammered, heated and then melted into it’s final shape.

This specific process continues to be repeated and then the sword is continually heated and then cooled minus any hammering. This process in absolutely mandatory in order to maintain the particular elements of which makes up the Scottish sword. These masterful elements are the perfect combination of the right amount of strength and grit, along with a special flexibility that can work it’s way through any adverse situation.

Swords in the Military

Scottish swords really came into their own during such battles like the Scottish–Norwegian War, the Battle of Dunbar, Battle of Nesbit Moore and the Battle of Flodden. There are so many other battles that these swords came into major prominence in but these listed battles in particular were handedly fought with reliance on these majestic blades. The Scottish Army, Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force were military forces to be reckoned with and they had greatly relied on these fantastic military swords as a way to victory.

In Film

In films like 1995’s “Braveheart” the Claymore sword was referenced quite a bit. It was somewhat of a smaller-sized sword but it still always took two hands to hold it properly. The lead protagonist played by Mel Gibson, wielded the Claymore sword often. In the movie “Rob Roy”, Liam Neeson sports a Scottish broadsword through most of the film. The presence of this Scottish sword gave the overall image of Rob Roy a more fierce element, as he battled through hordes of opposition. These two non-fictional men were both gallant heroes who carved their name into history.
